31 Days Day 10 – Night of the Demons (1988)

Sorry about the delay, I’ve been a little behind on this, since life has gotten in the way. I should be caught up on Monday, the Canadian thanksgiving.

Oddly, this is the only of the series I have never seen. I have even seen the remake. I guess it’s because I have oddly enough, never found this prior to a few days ago. Strangely the sequels, especially the 3rd one, are very common, especially at Walmart.

This film is very similar to the sequels, almost identical, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It is a fun film, much like the others. It’s pretty mindless, but adds some nice seasoning of nudity and gore to get through a merely ok plot. The story involves a goth girl and her slutty friend-played by Linnea Quigley, in all her glory- having a Hallowe’en party at the Hull House, an abandoned mortuary with an underground river. There is your standard 80’s partying teenager scenes, but then after a seance, things go awry.

This film has some pretty good gore, and the female leads are for the most part attractive and in various states of undress. It has a great Hallowe’en atmosphere and a sub plot that pays off well at the end. The mortuary setting works very well, and it is very well paced. It also features a great over the top character – Stooge – whom needs to be in a buddy picture with Mace Jackson from the Majorettes – maybe I’ll write that one.

Rating: B+(75%)

PROS: Some good gore, great Hallowe’en atmosphere, good pacing.

CONS: The demon effects are kind of cheesy and in parts look poorly done, some male leads are annoying.
