…Well it has been 18 months or so since I last updated, my life took a huge turn. I got over the failed marriage, got close to someone that has meant the world to me for awhile, lost that, a year to date of losing my marriage, and been kind of drifting in the world. So I have not had any desire for horror, or anything. As something came to an end tonight, I needed an escape and during that entire amazing high and crushing low, Hitch-Hike haunted me.
I put it off so many times…. Well as things ended and needing some release, how about some David Hess mayhem?
Damn… that BluRay from Japan has an awesome cover.
Hmm the theme and ending of this really hit a nerve with what has happened to me lately. This movie is very thought provoking and has a serious moral dilemma at the climax. I think, being the way things transpire and recent real life events, I would do the same.
Franco Nero is great as Walter, the protagonist. He is legit bad ass, and plays well against the over the top David Hess, in all his slimiest glory. A broken couple, with odd sexual habits, pick up a hitch hiker, on their way back from a holiday. From there, they are held hostage, party to several shootings, and their marriage and future is put to the test. Can they survive this ordeal? If they can, can their marriage survive?
This movie is a great example of the road movie exploitation, done right. The desert settings work well in their bleak misadventure. David Hess, is perfect, and their some revenge elements, of course, since that is his genre. The pacing has some issues, and there is a completely inexplicable plot hole, a big one. However, it definitely gets the job done. There is some oddly premonitory social commentary, about gay relationships, and it makes you really ponder morality.
RATING: A- (80%)
PROS: David Hess is over the top, great scenery, thought provoking, decent gore and characters.
CONS: Some pacing issues, a major plot hole, gun violence is not big for me.
