A long time has passed since, well viewed anything, and especially since been or written on here,  mainly because real life,  has been a horror ride,  with way less thrills,  and a lot more fear,  terror and darkness.   Aside,  as a source of therapy,  a sad attempt to bring some feeling or some excitement,  back to life and my favorite time of year,  going to try reviving 31 days marathon and blog,  whom knows,  may this is what I needed.

This was a blind buy,  however, I have seen the above trailer.   I love the carnival,  fall fairs,  especially created and added to my love of this season,  and even the genre.  I am anticipating this to be a pseudo remake of Freaks,  which I love,  just more grindhouse like.  Hoping on the old time carnival atmosphere,  nostalgia and some earlier genre gore.   Alright enough,  let’s rock this shit.

Soooooo…  Well that was definitely something.    The basic plot?   Jade is a southern country type waitress,  wanting more from life,  than her abusive,  sexually harassing boss,  so she joins the carnival.   Eventually marrying the owner of the sideshow,  whom is wealthy and well liked.   However, things aren’t what they seem,  and things take a wrong turn.

Alright.  This film,  has nearly 50 percent of the run time,  with no dialogue at all,  instead is a score reminiscent of the 1967  Spiderman cartoon.  Kind of an acid jazz,  beatnik kind of awfulness.   It becomes very annoying quickly.   Pacing is almost nonexistent here,  nothing much happens about 75 percent of the film,  you are treated to a set up,  then tear down of a carnival,  twice.  There is pretty much no character development,  barely any plot,  what there is though,  is cliched,  stale and very tired.   The titular character,  only has a mere 2-3 minutes screen time at the finale,  which happens well because.   The one high point I suppose,  is Claire Brennen ,  is both attractive and fun to watch,  even with her character being a bipolar,  often insufferable bitch.   There is basically no gore,  nothing going on,  and the worst fight scene I have seen in a very long time.  It’s far too dull,  to be enjoyed on the so bad it’s good level,  was very hard to keep awake or throw in the towel on this one.

LOOKS LIKE THE CURSE OF THESE 31 DAYS BLINDS IS BACK…. WITH A RATIO OF 80 PERCENT AWFUL TO DATE….   UGH….

RATING:   D- (51%)

PROS:   Claire Brennan is quite attractive,  the old carnival sights have a certain magic to them,  especially during the night scenes.

CONS:   More than half the film has no dialogue,  there is not motivations for actions really,  there is no justification for actions,  awful gore and fight scene,  pretty much nothing in general,  unlikeable characters galore,   zero character development,  pretty much no plot.

It’s been a long time past since last post, Hitch-Hike, since, well really life has hit all time lows, I have not watched anything, pawned 2/3s my horror collection for nickels on the dollar,  and I haven’t found any enjoyment in anything.

Fair warning:  I am still in same mind set, so this review could be impacted.  However, this is fucking Phantasm 5…. Been waiting forever for this.  Well here I dive in.

Alright, the opening, was perfect.  It was a fun throwback, good exposition and had a great energy to it.  However, already one complaint, HD….. I know, I know the times right?    The HD is slightly taking me out of this,  it’s just started …ok one more bitching point… CGI spheres …

Wow…I am just not sure what to say nor think… It’s very short, well paced, has the typical Phantasm feel of broken and unstable realities, expanding through out the film.  One reality, which is also a potential ending, had me praying it did not end there.  Although now considering it further, as well as the promo’s with the definition of the word… It does make sense.   So the Tallman has won, has captured our reality, and seems multiple other ones, and offers Reggie, his nightmare, a chance to have it all back, if he gives up, or be damned and tortured trying to fight it.  His choice, is as expected and warps us through, time, space and realities.

I wanted to love this, I did, but like part 4,  kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.  It is kind of convoluted, flash cuts, jumps all over the place, sometimes hard to follow.   The brevity , I suspect due to budget, makes the open ending suspect, had they had funding, would it have resolved, or did it even?   I may have to re-watch, actually maybe the entire series, since the theory of overlapping realities,  may make this make more sense.    The gore was decent, it was nicely violent, the characters mostly likeable, including a new addition, that was surprisingly fun.  A very aged, Angus,  in his final months, was perfectly above the top and still looked great,  Reggie showed his aging more.

I was super depressed walking into this, and a caveat, it made it worse.

Existential depression does not fare well with multiverse type films.

Rating :  I wanted to do an inconclusive, since requires a re watch, and really revisit to entire series, since have noticed a common theme in boards and other reviews, since it does line up well if you do.  So for now a B(75%)

PROS:  Reggie Bannister makes this movie, still likeable as ever, the general plot is intriguing, good gore effects and violence.

CONS:  Open ending again, and with death of Angus and struggle to get this one out, there will never be an end – which also could be the point – one potential reality had me cringing but made a lot of sense, the climax of the film is very rushed.

…Well it has been 18 months or so since I last updated, my life took a huge turn.  I got over the failed marriage, got close to someone that has meant the world to me for awhile, lost that, a year to date of losing my marriage, and been kind of drifting in the world.  So I have not had any desire for horror, or anything.  As something came to an end tonight, I needed an escape and during that entire amazing high and crushing low, Hitch-Hike haunted me.

I put it off so many times…. Well as things ended and needing some release, how about some David Hess mayhem?

Damn… that BluRay from Japan has an awesome cover.

Hmm the theme and ending of this really hit a nerve with what has happened to me lately.  This movie is very thought provoking and has a serious moral dilemma at the climax.  I think, being the way things transpire and recent real life events, I would do the same.

Franco Nero is great as Walter, the protagonist.  He is legit bad ass, and plays well against the over the top David Hess, in all his slimiest glory.  A broken couple, with odd sexual habits, pick up a hitch hiker, on their way back from a holiday.  From there, they are held hostage, party to several shootings, and their marriage and future is put to the test.  Can they survive this ordeal?  If they can, can their marriage survive?

This movie is a great example of the road movie exploitation, done right.  The desert settings work well in their bleak misadventure.  David Hess, is perfect, and their some revenge elements, of course, since that is his genre.  The pacing has some issues, and there is a completely inexplicable plot hole, a big one.  However, it definitely gets the job done.  There is some oddly premonitory social commentary, about gay relationships, and it makes you really ponder morality.

RATING:  A-  (80%)

PROS:  David Hess is over the top, great scenery, thought provoking, decent gore and characters.

CONS:  Some pacing issues, a major plot hole, gun violence is not big for me.

31 Films # 20 – An intermission

Here’s some Hallowe’en videos, since it’s the 30th and well I am not going to make this deadline this year, some old favorites and some influences on my own foray into this genre, well from when I was a kid.

Possibly my favorite commercial period, it so embodies the spirit of the season, is perfectly cheesy and a tradition since youtube.

Scarios, One of the best pastas ever, well canned, and only for the shapes, taste like complete bland really, but damn the shapes, and fun campy commercials. UFOs were great too.

Monsters cereal, although now available in Canada this year, I still could not get any since they were either sold out, or never carried. I miss the days they were always available. They are not as good as they were, with recipe changes. However, these damn commercials are entertaining as hell, and a good part of my love for the genre, when I was a kid. Healthy, they are not, but they make me smile still.

Awful cereal, yes, but damn near perfect commercial.

This is the whole episode, and one of the biggest reasons I grew into a genre fan and an Alice Cooper fan. It’s a great episode, Alice at his best, in his prime. So much of this brings a smile to my face.

It’s odd really, how some advertising, a kids show, some products, started my way to a love of horror. I was really a timid kid horror wise, but these items worked me in well. They still hold up today for me as well. I’m so glad and honored to pass these on, there are tons more, but only so much time and room for these kind of things. If I do not post tomorrow, Happy Hallowe’en, hope you enjoyed this year’s project, although I failed to complete it on time, I will do so in the coming weeks. So get out there, go door to door, with the crisp fall air, in the jack o lantern lit night. Get your monsters cereal, or ghoul aid if you are lucky enough to have acquired them, sit back and check out some of this awesome genre that brings us together. But watch out, something maybe lurking in the darkness, waiting to feed on you……

I of course, yet again will be working…..oh the true horror.
